We Construction at Early Republic Period: An Assessment About History Textbooks
Abstract :
Modern nation identity needs supra-identity instead of traditional identity. Common cultural dignities, memories and manner codes are restructured. Modern national states benefit from education to redound this new identity and culture. Especially history lessons embrace it as a main mission. In this study, we examine that how and for what purposes we constructed on history text books at 1930s. Qualitative content and document analysis were used. Findings were examined based on “urbanity statement”, “race and origin”, “national character”, “common language” and “history and sacred homeland” themes.In the study, it was revealed that creating a unity through common space, origin, language and cultural values through the history teachingfor a homogenous society, intended by nation-states, is aimed. This state was considered corresponding to world’s development, in terms of 1930s’ soul.
