A Study on Student Cyberwellness Scales Development

Abstract :
The purpose of this study is to develop internet addiction, cyber bullying, netiquette, online privacy, inappropriate online content, copyright, and cyber security scales oriented to secondary school students within the scope of cyber wellness framework. Being a scale-development study, the research is made up of two phases. Initially, content validity was studied by means of expert opinion, then, construct validity and reliability were tested via data gathered through 528 students participation at 6th-7th-8th grade. After the question pools constructed for scales were organized, they were submitted to expert opinion. Based on Lawshe method, and experts’ oral feedback in the process of designing the scales, the scales were prepared for pilot study. Later, pilot study was conducted through 528 students’ participation in four secondary schools in Aksaray province. With the data gathered, exploratory factor analysis and depending on this analysis, varimax rotation method and confirmatory factor analysis were utilized to test construct validity of scales. Also, internal consistency reliability coefficient Cronbach Alpha, item-total correlation, and group mean differences between bottom-top 27% were applied to test reliability of the scales. After the analyses, the scales were finalized by means of extraction and editing of some items. Thanks to the scales, it is aimed to determine secondary school students’ cyberwellness awareness and to raise conscious users by making consciousness-raising operations.
