Abstract
This study investigated first year prospective middle school mathematics teachers’ readiness for functions. A survey was prepared based on literature, various aspects of functions and the courses that include function concept at the undergraduate level and applied to 79 teacher candidates. The findings of the study showed that the prospective teachers had difficulty in identifying functions from their algebraic representations, defining functions, and using functions as problems solving tools. In addition, although the prospective teachers were better in solving function tasks that included algebraic representations and required to use algebraic techniques compared to tasks that involved graphical representations, the results showed that this was mainly procedural.
