Abstract :
Towards the end of 19th century and at the begining of 20th century, within the framework of German expansionism, Germans established several different social and cultural institutions such as orphanages, health institutions and schools. These institutions were also used for some other purposes. The general aim of this study is to provide information as to Germans’ cultural expansionist activities and the place of these activities within the socio-cultural structure of Ottoman State. More specifically this study focuses on the investigation of German institutions such as orphanages, health institutions and schools with various aspects. During this investigation mainly two primary sources were used: (1) original documents from the Ottoman archive and (2) peoples’ memoirs who worked in these institutions during this period. The study reached the conclusion that German institutions operating in Maraş, as was the case in many other provinces of Ottoman State, had diplomatic and geopolitical importance with political and strategic features.
