Abstract :
The quality of education is highly directly proportional with teachers‟ quality. The purpose of this study is to examine teacher candidates‟ self efficacy perceptions in terms of different variables. This study was realized through descriptive survey model. The population of the study was composed of 804 students attending the last grade of Dicle University Ziya Gökalp Education Faculty in the academic year of 2011-2012. The study sample consisted of 286 teacher candidates selected through random sampling from different programs. Personal information form and “The Scale of Self-Efficacy of Teacher Candidates for Teaching Profession” (SSETCTP) developed by the researchers were used in the collection of the data. Descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation), t test and one-way analysis of variance were employed in the analysis of the data. The results show that teacher candidates‟ self efficacy perceptions towards teaching profession are at medium level in terms of “recognizing and evaluating the student” dimension and at good level in terms of other four dimensions. Teacher candidates see themselves especially more adequate in “art of teaching” and “communication and social competency” dimensions. Thus, it can be said that more importance should be given to “recognizing and evaluating the student” in teacher training.
