The Views of Students Learning Turkish as a Foreign Language (C1 Level) on Listening Skill
Abstract :
The purpose of this study is to seek an answer to the question: “What are the views of learners learning Turkish as a foreign language on listening skill?” In the present study, a qualitative research involving focus group discussion was conducted in order to determine the views of students learning Turkish as a foreign language about listening skill. The data for the study was collected via focus group discussion with eight students currently enrolled in Gaziantep University TÖMER and they were all C1 level students. Findings related to the nine subgoals of the study were derived from descriptive analysis of the data obtained from focus group discussion. It was inferred from the findings that listening Turkish, especially on specific topics, is very difficult; some sounds, polysemic words and figurative speeches in Turkish make listening difficult, and it was also inferred that both students and teachers have various responsibilities in and outside the class to improve the listening skills. In the light of the findings some recommendations were made for teachers teaching Turkish as a foreign language, experts preparing course materials (e.g. books, CDs, films etc.) and all the institutions and organizations serving in this field.
