Title Of Article :
Crime and Punishment in Princely Court
Abstract :
Registers that contain decisions taken in the courts of Ottoman princes who governed in the provinces include not only matters of administration and appointment, but also legal issues. Only a few of these registers has survived such as the one that belonged to Prince Mehmed’s (future Mehmed III) princely court during his tenure in Manisa (997-1003 / 1588-1594). Crimes and punishments mentioned in this register reveal the princely court’s role in provincial justice, prince’s jurisdiction, as well as the criminal profile and diversity. An interesting point worthy of mention is that the punishment for serious crimes was, in tandem with other practices of the era, galley labour.
