A NEW GRAMMATICAL INFORMATION OFFER FOR DICTIONARIES: SUFFIXES DETERMINED BY PARTICLES
Abstract :
One of the grammatical information units in general Turkish dictionaries is essential case suffixes in verb definitions. It is known that verbs determine case suffixes to essential complements in verb phrases. These suffixes may change as for that meanings of verbs. For example, the verb “git-” takes the case suffix [+e] when it means “to tend somewhere” but it takes +[ den] when it means “to leave a place or an affair”. In Turkish, even particles (postpositions) determine case suffixes to essential complements in prepositional phrases like verbs do. For example, biz+e göre, Ģiir+e dair, sen+den baska, dün+den beri etc. Essential case suffixes don’t take part in particle definitions in general Turkish dictionaries as grammatical information unit. This is both lack and inconsistency. So particle definitions in general Turkish dictionaries must be reorganized and this lack must be removed. It will be so helpful for both native speakers and Turkish learners to remove this lack and inconsistency in general Turkish dictionaries.
