Abstract :
With the changes in the law following the Tanzimat Fermanı, the kadi and naib being the main supports of the Ottoman legal system were to receive training being subject to this program and, as a result of the preparations undertaken the Muallimhâne-i Nüvvâb was established on the 16th of August 1855. From its foundation the Muallimhâne-i Nüvvâb, followed the legal program which changed with the regulations of 1883 when they were renewed. The name Mekteb-i Nüvvâb in 1885 was changed to the Mekteb-i Kuzât in 1908. The administration and teaching in the school was established upon certain principles and rules due to the Mekteb-i Kuzât Nizamnâmesi of the same year with the aim of providing a better legal education. This school continued education in a building in the Süleymaniye Külliyesi until 1909 and then provided education from a building designed by the architect Kemalettin from 1909 onwards, which from 1924 became the Library of the University of Istanbul. The regulations and changes made in the Nizamname, Madrasa al-Kuzat Nizamnâme which was published on the 3rd of January 1914 was the last and the most comprehensive charter of this school. At the end of World War I the Madrasa al-Kuzat building was taken over by occupation forces, causing a break in education, it was reopened after the war’s end. Although it survived as an organization with examinations in the period of the Republic following the necessary arrangements, the Madrasa al-Kuzat was completely closed in 1924, terminating this educational institution.
