Abstract :
Drowning can result in injury or death. There may be people who attempt to rescue in a case of drowning. Drowning events are preventable. On the one hand some rescue initiatives may result in multiple drowning in which the drowning and the rescuers together drowned and on the other hand the event can result in only the drowning of the attempted rescuer. The aim of this research is to investigate multiple drowning in Turkey in 2011. Reports of drowning were analyzed between January 1, 2011 and December 31, 2011 using different search engines such as national news agencies, agencies, national search engines online news sites and regional news sites. In Turkey, in 2011, 29 multiple drowning occurred. In these events, 50 people (4 women 16,75 ± 4,57; 8% and 46 men 27,24 ± 14,90; 92%) lost their lives. In these incidents 16 (32%) children and 34 (68%) adults were drowned. A total of 34 people, including two women and thirty-two men, intervened in the case of drowning, formed multiple drowning cases. Forty-nine (%27,5) of the 69 people who were involved in multiple drowning were rescued. In fourteen incidents, the rescuer and the victim were drowned at the same time (28 persons, 56%). In both cases, the rescuers and the victims were overwhelmed together (6 persons, 12%). There is only one case which shows that four people who intervened to rescue the victim of the primary drowning were drowned at the same time (8%). It is important to educate people for drowning events and it is essential to have swimming and rescuing training and experience.
