Bilateral striopallidodentate calcinosis: Comparison of CT and MRI fi ndings
Abstract :
Bilateral striopallidodentate calcinosis, also named as ‘Fahr disease’, is a disorder characterized with bilateral and almost symmetric calcifi cations in basal ganglia, dentate nuclei, thalamus and cerebral white matter. It can be either idiopathic or secondary to infectious, toxic or metabolic reasons. Because the stage of the calcifi cations and other minerals that accumulate beside calcium produce different signals, magnetic resonance imaging may lead to problems in diagnosis. Computerized tomography is more sensitive than magnetic resonance imaging in demonstrating these mineral deposits. We reported a patient with striopallidodentat calcinosis who presented with neuropsychiatric symptoms and we compared brain computerized tomography and magnetic resonance imaging fi ndings.
