The diagnostic value of the urine cytology in bladder cancer
Abstract :
Aim: Comparison of the urine cytology and histopathologic diagnoses and to determining the accurancy rate of cytologic diagnosis on the cancer of bladder in the Pamukkale University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Medical Pathology. Materials and Methods: Two hundred seventy two urine cytology that were sent to Pamukkale University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Medical Pathology between July 2007 and January 2010 were determined as study group. Results: We obtained the biopsy materials of 157 patients all of whom studied on. 136 patients out of 157 were diagnosed of benign cytology and 21 of them were diagnosed malign cytology. The cases of 133 were accurately diagnosed cytologically including 114 correctly negative cases and 19 incorrectly positive cases. In addition, two cases were incorrectly positive diagnosed while 22 cases were incorrectly negative diagnosed. According to these results, the sensitivity rate was found out as %46,3, specifi city rate as %98,2, accuracy rate as %84,7. Conclusion: In our studies there are two cases which we incorrectly positive diagnosed. We conclude that false negative results may result from technical causes, insuffi cient clinical information for pathologic examination and inadequate fi xation of materials.
