Breastfeeding and nutrition patterns of babies in Burdur

Abstract :
Purpose: In this research, it was aimed to determine the nutrition pattern and mothers’ lactation case of their babies, who was born in 2009. Materials and methods: Population of this study, which was made within the type of cross sectional, includes 2318 women who gave birth in the year 2009, Burdur. When determined according to the prevalence that is required to reach 50%, and including 2% error margin, and also when the error level is taken as 5%, the sample size which represents population at epi info program was calculated as 1179. The women to be included in the study were chosen randomly. After getting the necessary permissions, the data which was collected with faceto- face interviews with the midwives and nurses working at Burdur Publich Health Center were analyzed at SPSS 10,5 packaged software. Results: Average age of mother’s babies who participated into the research is 9.2±4 and its median is 9 (0-18) months. 99.4% of babies were lactated for a while, 74.2% of them were lactated within the first hour; 37% of them were temporarily given additional nutrition within first three days. 52.9% of babies who were under six months were fed only with human breast milk. Among all the babies, the ones for whom the discontinuing breast-feeding occurs are 21.5%. The average lactation time of the babies for these babies is 5.5±3.5 months. 40.3% of the babies under six months fed with human breast milk together with additional nutrition was given baby food while 48.7% of these were fed with milk and dairy products. Conclusion: The level of lactation in Burdur is high. Nourishment only with human breast milk under six months, receiving human breast milk for the ones the discontinuing breast-feeding occurs are inadequate. In this context, the studies which will define the information level, attitude and behavior of health staff about the importance of human breast milk and not beginning additional nutrition before six months are to be carried out, the results are to be discussed by health employees and the applied lactation policy is to be revised.
