Abstract :
As a result of the global and rapid dissemination of the capitalist trade relations evolving after the Industrial Revolution, the Ottoman Empire had also been subject to the respective relations since the 1830s. One of the drastic effects of the dissemination process was the changing attitude in the conception of economic relations in the Ottoman Empire. The economic structure of the Empire was gravely metamorphosed with the acceptance of the free trade relations particularly after 1838. Consequently the Ottoman Empire opened the doors to capitalist world economy and some ruptures were experienced in the traditional structure. In this study, the reflection of the transformations experienced in the Ottoman economic system on an Ottoman Anatolian city, Tarsus, is revealed.
