Water in the Socio-Economic Life of the Ottoman: The 18th Century Rum Province Sample
Abstract :
Water which deserves the most valuable adjectives like “the source of life” or “the core of existence” had indispensable importance for the Ottoman society. Water was also among the most valuable treasuries for the Rum Province people who had been living in a life that was depended on the continuity of the water sources. Water had been used in many fields from drinking to irrigation from cleaning to working of workshops. The aim of this study is to evaluate the importance of water in the social and economic life via the events recorded in the Ahkâm (Complaint) Registers in the Rum Province which was an important region of the Ottoman geography. Five Ahkâm Registers of the middle of the eighteenth century were investigated.
