Abstract :

The State of Republic of Turkey which is established after Ottoman Empire chooses the way making serious initiatives for coming up with developed communities in all areas at the beginning. The reforms which are made especially for society aim to increase living standards and maintain social order besides modernization. The reforms include the surname act. The issue which is mentioned firstly in Civil Law becomes a law in 1934. The law apart from the aims putting order to official transactions and social operations, it is accepted that the piece of the understanding of simplification of Turkish language. The understanding of nationalism which is widespread in Europe in 1930 appears that kind of implementation in Turkey. A regulation is published for more understanding and implementing the surname act. After this regulation, it is started to implement the surname act. It is completed successfully giving surname even though having some problems in the implementation process which is biyearly. The two complementary laws are carried out like abolishing nickname and giving Atatürk surname to Mustafa Kemal with the surname act in this process.
