Abstract
The water that is used in the production process of a commodity is called “virtual water”. When the country exports a water-intensive product to another country, it exports water in virtual form. In this way some countries support other countries in their water needs. Consequently, international trade of products brings along international flows of virtual water. The objective of this paper is to investigate the volumes of virtual water flows between nations related to international trade of agricultural products and to analyse the effects of virtual water flows on water management in relation to virtual water balance.
