A survey study to Menemen-Izmir cotton producers (about plant protection)

Abstract :
This study was made as an survey in Menemen and its villages with 82 producers in 2009. 16 questions asked to farmers and the results evaluated. Cotton cultivation in Menemen were done in 80.276 da area. While 54% of the producers (44 farmers) were primary school graduated, only 2% of them university graduated. %69 of the production were done in 100-500 da. Rate of making crop rotation were %59 (48 farmers). %32 (26 farmers) of the producers were done crop rotation as cultivating wheat one in 4 years. Most of the producers (%91-75 farmers) know the weeds, which are serious problems of the cotton cultivation, The important weeds are; nightshade (Solanum nigrum), cocklebur (Xanthium strumarium), bermuda grass (Cynodon dactylon) and johnsongrass (Sorghum halepense). The most used herbicides were determined as trifluralin and glyphosate isopropylamin salt (%90- 74 farmers). The rate of producers who bought the herbicides as consulting %89-73 farmers. All of the producers has used defoliants. Some of the producers (%52- 43 farmer) throw away the pesticides boxes. The most important three problems in cotton production were determined as; the low price of cotton, increasing of production cost, unfavorable climate conditions.
