Abstract :
The aim of this study is to determine general characteristics of tomato production and marketing oriented to export in Muğla. All tomatoes exported from the city are grown in greenhouses. Research was conducted in Fethiye and Ortaca districts in which tomato production and exportation are common. A survey was realised with 92 growers selected randomly via face to face interviews. Questions were asked to the producers to provide information about the farms and growers, greenhouse structures, soil preparation, cultivation practices, yield and marketing. It was determined that tomato cultivation in greenhouses was started in 1973 in the region and the first export was realised in 1984. The most common holding size (49%) changes between 0.1-0.3 ha. It was determined that proportion of greenhouses covered with glass and plastics are 31 and 69%, respectively. Greenhouses are heated only to protect the plants from frost damage. Common yield levels change between 110-200 tons/ha in long term production and 75-100 tons/ha in short season production. Exported tomato quantities changed according to the centres that survey studies carried out and the highest values were recorded in Kumluova (50-180 tons/ha) took place.
