Ecological assessment of urban development in Antalya and suggestions in the scope of sustainability
Abstract :
Half of the worlds’ population lives in cities. As the urban developments may have negative effects on the nature, ecological approaches are being considered in urban development studies. Ecological planning in and around the cities has a character of “Landscape Planning” that aims to protect natural elements, to improve ecological conditions, to prevent or reduce the effects of factors deteriorating environmental quality and to find out the potential of nature in order to conserve it. In Antalya, the tourism capital of Turkey, environmental problems are getting more and more effective on the people and the nature due to the immigration in the last 20 years and associated increase in urban population. Determination of the future urban development areas in accordance with ecological framework and, thus, providing sustainable use of natural resources is the purpose of this study, which has been based on a detailed inventory of natural structure of the area. The study has been carried out in three phases as: Analysis of natural structure and existing land uses of the study area; Synthesis of the data obtained; Determination of appropriate areas for future urban developments; Results and suggestions. In conclusion, new urban development areas that have been determined in accordance with ecological framework may be a basic reference for sustainable urban development approaches when revising existing structural plan and/or preparing future plans.
