Abstract :
Assessment of damping depth and retardation time of heat waves in soil is important for determining temperature status and selecting necessary land management to provide optimum temperature. This study was carried out to determine the damping depth and retardation time of soil temperature along soil profile at grass covered (I. Field) and shaded areas (II. Field) by peach trees in Carsamba, Samsun-Turkey. The values for damping depth of heat waves in each 10 cm of 0-100 cm soil layer were determined between 0.17 m and 2.59 m in I. field and between 0.40 m and 2.70 m in II. field. Daily mean values for damping depth in I. and II. fields were determined as 1.10 m and 1.36 m, respectively. The values for retardation time of maximum soil surface temperature at soil layers were determined between 0.54 h and 6.40 h in I. field and between 0.21 h and 7.03 h in II. field. Daily mean values for the retardation time in I. and II. fields were determined as 2.50 h and 2.02 h, respectively. Soil temperature, heat diffusivity coefficient, amplitude and frequency of heat waves together with other environmental factors have significant effects on damping depth and retardation time.
