Abstract :

identities of today’s cities, which are in the process of negative change because of unplanned urbanization accelerated with the industrial revolution, are losing their characteristics and becoming similar settlements. It has been seen that most of elements and places, that have dominant effects on the identity of these cities still maintain their importance today, however they are under the pressure of unplanned urbanization and as a result of administrative mistakes, they cannot function properly and their positive imaginative effect is under the threat of termination. The subject of this study is the assessment of the identity problem of Izmir in the example of Konak – Karabaglar Subdistrict that is faced with a similar problem. In this study which the imaginative effect of the settlement itself and the symbolic elements (identity codes) on the city identity have been discussed, the specialist’s and the user’s assessment were accepted as the main criteria and from this point of view observation and questionnaire methods were used. In the light of the results obtained, it has been concluded that even though the research area has an important role on the city identity, there are physical conditions that cause negative effects on the settlement identity. Solution suggestions have been offered in this study which will remove the reasons of the negative effects and will improve the image perception of the settlement.
