After Orientalism

In his “paradigm-shifting” work Orientalism, Edward Said examined the old tradition of literature/discourse generated by the cultural, political and economic interests of Europe on the East. One can mention some other names who put forward ideas about orientalism and criticized to a certain extent the European orientalist thought, especially its methodology. Nevertheless, none of them has achieved the impact of Said’s Orientalism. In this article, the criticisms directed at Orientalism by Bernard Lewis, Sadik Jalal al-Azm, Aijaz Ahmad, Leonard Binder, Fred Halliday, Michael Richardson, and James Clifford have been scrutinized from the perspective whether they provide us with the opportunity to benefit from Said’s title in a more comprehensive way and how they contributed to the debate on orientalism.
