Abstract :
This article deals with the development and academic institutionalization of sociology in Turkey. Firstly, it outlined general characteristics of European and Turkish sociology and discussed the reasons for this shown interest in sociology. Since the Ottoman period, Turkish intellectuals who believed to save the state by Westernization policies as well as assumed to reach to Western social level by positivist philosophy and sociology, have tried to transfer the prescription of order and progress to their own language. They introduced those Western scholars fit into Turkish political tradition, suggest a certain policy, and support their position by means of social scientific legitimacy. Through their own works and translations, they adapted those Western scholars’ works, concepts and theories to the conditions of their country in which those works, concepts and theories brought the feature of conscious transference to the Turkish sociology. In this article, the history of sociology in Turkey is mainly based on leading sociologists, works and debates in the pre- and post-academic periods before and after 1914, 1933, 1960 and 1980.
