Journal Mir Islama (1912-1914): Two Faces of Islamic Studies in Russia
Abstract :
Political and national movements that occurred among the Muslims of Russia at the end of 19th century and in the beginning of the 20th century were perceived as a threat by the Russian government. This threat brought the need of research and close observation of the Muslims of Russia. The journal Mir Islama that was first issued in St. Petersburg at 1912 in relation to the Ministry of Internal Affairs was designed to serve this purpose. In the beginning, being edited by V.V. Barthold the journal continued its academic studies; however, as this path was not seen useful for the political purposes. D.M. Pozdneev took V.V. Barthold’s place and the journa l startedto follow the political purposes. Even though Mir Islama is an important source on the issues like jadidism, Muslim press, women’s emancipation and the idea of unity among the Muslims of Russia, the content of the journal is still a mystery to the Turkish academic society. This article, therefore, aims at presenting a critical evaluation of the journal as a scholarly, cultural and political source.
