Solitary phalangeal osteochondroma
Abstract :
Osteochondroma is the most common benign bone tumor which presents as a clinical form of hereditary multiple exostosis or as a solitary lesion. In hereditary condition, the hand is a relatively common site of involvement. However, solitary osteochondroma is rarely seen in the hand. Herein, two patients with phalangeal solitary osteochondroma are presented. A 39 year-old female has a small lump on the radial aspect of the middle phalanx of left long finger. She had no complaint except the mild pain and dysesthesia. A 13 year-old girl has a mass on the ulnar aspect of the right ring finger, located at the proximal phalanx. The adjacent small finger had restricted adduction. There was no history of previous trauma and no family history of multiple hereditary osteochondromatosis. Surgical excision was performed for both lesions and the diagnosis of osteochondroma was confirmed by histological examination. Surgical excision should be done if the phalangeal solitary osteochondroma produces pain, dysesthesia or functional impairment of the finger. Especially in children with osteochondromas, close follow-up and if needed early surgical treatment should be considered important to prevent the risk of the finger deformity.
