Abstract :
Purpose: Adolescent period is described as pregnancies between ages of 10 and 19 years by the World Health Organization. Pregnancies taking place in the adolescent period is still an important healthcare issue throughout the world. These deliveries pose short- and long-term risks that might cause negative effects on mother’s and infant’s health. This study aims to evaluate clinical approach towards adolescent deliveries in our clinic in the last 5 years.Materials and methods: The number of adolescent and non-adolescent deliveries, and cesarean delivery rates were searched by screening the birth records of the women below 20 between 2010 and 2014. Cesarean indications of both adolescent and non-adolescents were reviewed. p 0.05 was accepted as significant.Results: 1264 adolescent deliveries were detected between 2010 and 2014. 6.94% of deliveries in 2010, 8.26% of deliveries in 2011, 7.55% of deliveries in 2012, 7.95% of deliveries in 2013, and 5.28% of deliveries in 2014 were adolescent. Statistically significant difference was found between the rates of adolescent deliveries distributed according to years (p=0.02). While the cesarean/cesarean + vaginal delivery ratio of adolescent pregnancies was 31.20%, it was 33.22% in 2011, 22.63% in 2012, 22.04% in 2013 and 23.03% in 2014.Conclusion: Cesarean delivery rate was detected lower in adolescents and cephalo-pelvic disproportion (36.44%) was the most frequent indication of cesarean delivery in adolescents.
