Abstract :
Aim: Surgical site infections are serious problems in surgical departments for increasing mortality, morbidity, hospitalization duration, and cost. In this study it was aimed to examine high-level evidence studies regarding the effect of preoperative antiseptic showering on surgical site infections.Instrument and Method: 1034 studies published between the years 2005 and 2014 were examined and 17 international publications were included and evaluated in terms of comparison, limitation and results.Findings: It was seen as a result of this systematic examination that some studies reported that preoperative showering or bathing with antiseptic decreased the risk of surgical site infection. It was also revealed that the safety and efficiency of body cleaning products were related to appropriate timing and number of applying them.Besides, it was also seen that the rate of surgical site infection in patients having preoperative shower with chlorhexidine was lower compared to patients using other products.Result: It is thought that preoperative showering in the appropriate time and with appropriate antiseptic solutions might increase the chance of decreasing surgical site infections and contribute to providing quality health service by decreasing the cost.
