Effectiveness of a Toilet Training Program for Children with Intellectual Disabilities Provided by Their Mothers
Abstract :
In this study the effectiveness of a school based family training program on toilet training skills of mothers of children with intellectual disabilities and on children’s bladder control were investigated. The study group consisted of three children with intellectual disabilities and their mothers. In order to investigate the effectiveness of the family training program multiple baseline across subjects design was used. In order to gather data from mothers and children in the study group, dryness duration record keeping skill measurement tool, daytime bladder control facilitation skill measurement tool, and daytime bladder control measurement tool were used. The findings of this study showed that the school based family training program was effective on mothers’ record keeping of their children’s dryness duration and day time bladder control facilitation skills and on children’s achieving bladder control. Furthermore the findings indicated that children maintained their daytime toilet control skills two, four and six weeks after having completed the family training program and the program had high treatment fidelity.
