Abstract :
A person who guides visitors in the language of their choice and interprets the cultural and natural heritage of an area which person normally possesses an area-specific qualification usually issued and/or recognised by the appropriate authority. Tour guides have an important and multifaceted role in tourism industry. The role is defined as the expected behavior from the person who is in a specific location or is assigned with a specific function. Tour guides are role model persons who show the way to the visitors in a local region where the visitors never know and experience before. Therefore it is very important to examine and define the roles of the tour guides in their working life for the sustainable tour guiding. In this study it is aimed to examine the roles which the tour guides have undertaken / have to undertake in their working life. To reach the information that provides answers to the aims of the study, national and international literature have been reviewed about the study and a conceptual framework has been established. At the end of the examination it has been determined that the guides roles have been made more emphasis on the role of resource management and leadership in the nature based tourism activities and the role of cultural mediation and interpreter.
