THE HISTORY OF THE CLASSIFICATION OF SCIENCES IN 10TH - 17TH CENTURIES IN NEAR AND MIDDLE EAST
Abstract :
The classification of sciences has had an important place in particularly the philosophy of science and many philosophers have reached various scientific classifications on different bases. In the Meşşai school that developed the bases of this philosophy in the Ancient Greek philosophy and later ages, the classification of sciences took place for itself. Aristotle who dealt with the classification of sciences advocated that philosophy is the most basic science and sciences could be evaluated in three major categories. On the other hand, İbn Sina divides sciences into two categories as theoretical and practical ones. While the İhvan es-Safa movement produced an encyclopaedic complete works in Islamic philosophy and sciences that came into being in the 10th century, they put forward a certain scientific classification but they did not base this classification on Aristotelian philosophy unlike the other Islamic philosophical schools. There is no generally accepted scientific classification today. This article by Ebulfez Elcibey deals with the history of scientific classifications.
