While the tourism industry continues to grow very rapidly throughout the world; the competition among the countries that want to make more of the advantages of this sector is also growing. However, the economic success of tourism is dependent upon the presence of an effective tourism policy. Those countries that have experienced a planned tourism development continue their leadership in the world tourism. The countries that have experienced an unplanned growth in tourism, on the other hand, are witnessed to face with various problems. In this study, the conditions of economic success in tourism policies are discussed. In the study, an attempt to explain the economic development achieved by the tourism sector in the world and in Turkey with certain numerical data is made. The Ayvalik District of the Balikesir Province is examined as an example and some proposals have been developed in order to benefit more from tourism in the region.
