Governing with wisdom: Huseyin sevket s translation of ahidname written in verse by ali bin abi talib
Abstract :
Ahidname is a work of prose attributed to Caliph Ali (r. 656-661) in resources. Ali gave this political treatise to Malik Al-Ashtar when he appointed him as the governor of Egypt. Ahidname, which consists of advices to statesmen, has a number of Turkish translations. One of the translations is done by Huseyin Sevket Efendi from Yenisehir. This version is different from other translations in that it was written in verses in the author s work titled Kosova Sahrasi. This study examines Huseyin Sevket Efendi s translation, which consists of 39 couplets in the form of eulogy, comparatively with two prosaic translations of Ahidname. A comparison of these translations indicates that the poetic translation in hand is relatively sh orter than its prosaic counterparts. While they were briefly mentioned, the translator Huseyin Sevket Efendi included as many subjects as possible in his translation.
