OBEYING POLITICS, ABANDONING PATRONAGE: DULKADIRLI GOVERNOR SEHSUVAROGLU ALI BEY’S HACIBEKTASH FRIDAY MOSQUE
Abstract :
The Friday Mosque, which was constructed in Hacibektash by Şehsuvaroğlu Ali Bey, the last governor of one of the Anatolian Principalities which were centralized partially at 1515 and wholly at 1522 in the Ottoman Empire, is the subject matter of this study. Two major constructions are known to be constructed by the governor Şehsuvaroğlu Ali Bey who ruled the Dulkadirli Principality between 1515-1522. The first of these constructions is the Balım Sultan Shrine, which is located in the 1519 dated Hacı Bektaş Dervish Lodge and the second one is the Hacibektash Friday Mosque, which was constructed in 1520. The political conditions thought to be effective on Ali Bey’s patronage were aimed to be clarified within the perspective of Dulkadirli-Ottoman and Yavuz Sultan Selim-Ali Bey relations. Different approaches towards same patron’s different constructions in the same settlement were interpreted based on the inscription of each construction. Selecting the Dulkadirli-Osmanlı Principalities as baseline, whether the patronage of Ali Bey, which was taken to the background in the face of Yavuz Sultan Selim, took place among the other principalities before and after the eras in which Ali Bey and Yavuz Sultan Selim lived were also mentioned in this study. The confusion in the art history writings about the mosque which was constructed in Hacıbektaş by Şehsuvaroğlu was aimed to be clarified based upon the archive records and the constructions’ plan details.
