Abstract :
The subject of this article is the examination of 26 gravestones which is found Yakapinar village’s cemetery in Bayındır district in İzmir and belongs to the Republican period. On all of the gravestones, date of death is given but the date of birth and date of death are given in 16 samples. All the gravestones are close to the body in the form of a rectangle. The material lot. Observed in many of them elaborately, it was witnessed that all the motifs resembled each other. Common features of the gravestones are that all are treated with the motives of the pocket watch. Clocks, thought to show the time of death, are believed to be processed. Although there were people who died at the time, most of them died at different times. The time of their dead is unclear and whether it was at the daylight or night is not certain. We encounter with an embellishment program where geometric, herbal and objects are used in the gravestones. As floral motifs suspended things, flowers, curved branches, tulip, violet and cypress, moon and stars draw attention as geometric motifs while motifs in the shape of a tie, ribbon and chained pocket watch attract attention as objects of decoration. All of the grave stone patterns with pocket watch are the ones belonging to males and except for one, the rest instances of the title are arranged in the form of a human head. In the inscriptions on the stones, the nicknames of the person or family are often given but the religious titles or professions of the dead were not processed over the dead stones. Gravestones in the cemetery, with the motifs and inscriptions, are extremely important because they reflect the Tahtacı Turkish-Alewi culture.
