Abstract
Since ancient times, heating wood has been used a method to dry and modify its properties. Nowadays, heat treatment is used in industrial processes for the same reasons. Treatment at temperatures above 150 °C can change the color, improve resistance to biodegradation and enhance dimensional stability. However, losses in the mechanical and technological strength of wood may also occur, and this drawback is a limitation for the use of heat-treated wood in a broad range of products. Data about the mechanical and physical properties of Turkish wood species are important for industry and academia In this study evaluated the effect of heat treatment on some physical and mechanical properties of blackpine (Pinus nigra var.pallasiana) and ash (Fraxinus exelsior L.) woods which have industrially high usage potential and large plantations in Turkey. The results indicated that the heat treatment method decreased the some physical and mechanical properties of wood material. The bending strength was the more effected depending on heat treatment However, the color of the samples was shifted to darker depending on temperature and duration.
