Abstract :
As result of this research carried out to determine the plants used for medicinal purposes by local people and sold in herbalists’ of Kelkit, local names and medicinal uses of 102 species belonging t o totally 48 families were determined. The biggest 5 families in terms of their number of taxon were found as Lamiaceae (14 taxa), Rosaceae (12 taxa), Asteraceae (10 taxa), Apiaceae (8 taxa) and Poaceae (5 taxa), respectively. The most frequently used parts of the plants were found as leaf (22 taxa), fruit (19 taxa), whole flower and plant (15 taxa each), seed and root (11 taxa each), respectively. Majority of plants were picked up from the natural flora. It was determined that 81 of determined 102 taxa were grown in the same region, but 21 of these were provided from other regions. Distribution of taxa to phytogeographical regions were as Euro-Siberian 18, Irano-Turanian 15, Mediterranean 6, and 63 taxa were found as multi-region or region-unknown. Totally 7 taxa w ere determined to be endemic. Local people generally used medicinal plants for asthma, bronchitis, cough, and influenza (25 plants), digestive disorders (18 plants) and kidney stone and disorders (17 plants). The most common use of plants was as tea (infusion). In addition, side effects of some plants were determined in the study.
