Abstract :
Ononis species are used for several ailments in Anatolian folk medicine. In this work, we investigated antioxidant properties of two solvent extracts (ethyl alchol and water) from two Ononis species (O. pubescens and O. ornithopodioides). Antioxidant activities were evaluated by different test systems including free radical scavenging (DPPH and O_2.), β‐carotene bleaching method, reducing power and metal chelating. Also, total phenolic and flavonoid contents were calculated for each extract. Antioxidant properties were strongly dependent upon the solvent used for extraction such as total phenolics and flavonoids. Results obtained in this work indicate that the Ononis species may be useful as a source of natural agents in food and pharmaceutical applications.
