MATHEMATICAL METACOGNITION AWARENESS INVENTORY TOWARDS MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS: VALIDITY AND RELIABILITY STUDY
Abstract :
The aim of this study was to develop an inventory to reveal mathematical metacognition awareness of middle school students. The metacognition awareness of students is variables of multifactor that couldn’t be directly observed. Therefore, literature, curriculum of secondary school and experts’ views are considered while generating items of draft inventory. A pilot study towards draft inventory was performed on 193 middle school students. The inventory given final form and called “Mathematical Metacognition Awareness Inventory” (MAMAI) was applied to 323 randomly selected middle school students studying on a state school in the second semester of 2013-2014 academic term in the province of Kars. The Cronbach’s Alpha coefficient was found to be .905 for the inventory with twenty three items. As a result of the exploratory factor analysis showed that the items making up the inventory clustered under three dimensions, and the total rate of variance explained by these dimensions determined 43.12 %. Eight items clustered in the first dimension, eight items clustered in the second dimension and seven items clustered in the last dimension were defined “mathematical knowledge”, “mathematical monitoring” and “mathematical determination”, respectively. As a result of the confirmatory factor analysis showed that the three factor model had sufficient fit indices. Finally, it can be said that the inventory is a reliable and valid measurement tool that can be applied in middle school mathematics courses.
