ANALYZING CANDIDATE CLASSROOM TEACHERS’ SKILL OF IDENTIFYING A SUBJECT OF DEBATE IN SOCIAL STUDIES COURSE
Abstract :
Determination of course’s acquisitions on which debate would address, the appropriateness of debating issues to the acquisitions of the course, appropriateness level of the debating issues to the primary school students and development of higher-order thinking skills are also important in the process of instruction. In this research, study group consist of 151 3rd grader classroom teacher candidates from Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University, Department of Elementary Education. The purpose of this study is to analyze the teacher candidates’ skill of identifying subjects of debate for the 4th graders in primary schools. Teacher candidates were asked to choose an acquisition from “Instructing Social Sciences” curricula and identify a subject of debate for this acquisition during the “Instructing Social Studies” course they took. Subjects of debate identified by candidate teachers are examined by three experts in terms of appropriateness level to the acquisition, level of 4th grade primary school students and higher-order thinking skills.
