Abstract :
Subject: Appendiceal mucocele is a rare cause of chronic abdominal pain and develops due to distension of the appendiceal lumen with mucus. Herein, we present the efficacy of diagnostic methods and outcomes after the surgery in a case of appendiceal mucocele.Case Presentation: A 47-year old female patient was admitted to the Emergency Department with the complaint of abdominal pain lasting for 6 months. On her physical examination, there was tenderness in the right lower quadrant of the abdomen and a mass lesion was palpated at the same location. On her whole abdominal ultrasonography and whole abdominal computed tomography, a mass lesion, which was considered to be an appendiceal mucocele, was detected. Conclusion: The patient underwent surgery with the pre-diagnosis of appendiceal mucocele. The appendix (10 cm in length and 1.5 cm in diameter), the radix of which extending into the lumen of the cecum with a wide base, was explored. An appendectomy and a cecal wedge resection were performed on the patient. She was discharged on the postoperative 4th day without any problems. The patient had no complaints at the postoperative 6 months.
