The role of the state in economies has always been a matter of debate. These debates are one of the most important reasons for the emergence of economic theories. However, the exist-ence of the state as an actor in the economy is accepted in almost all theories. In the 1980s, the role of states in the econo-my had been reduced. State s new role in the 1980s has found a powerful response in Britain and America. The most successful application in the world was Thatcher era England. Thatcher liberalized the markets with her liberal policies. There were four main pillars of Thatcher s policies: Tax reductions, public spend-ing reductions, tight-monetary policy and deregulation.Thatcher has inspired two theories while applying these policies. One of them is monetarism and the other is supply-side economics. In this study, applications of Thatcher period and the results of these applications have evaluated.

Ekonomilerde devletin rolü sürekli olarak tartışma konusu olmuştur. Bu tartışmalar ekonomi teorilerinin doğuşunun en önemli nedenlerinden birisidir. Ancak ekonomide devletin bir aktör olarak varlığı hemen hemen bütün teorilerde kabul görmektedir. 1980'li yıllarda devletlerin ekonomideki rolleri azaltılmıştır. Devletin bu yeni rolü, 1980'li yıllarda Birleşik Krallık ve Amerika’da güçlü bir karşılık bulmuştur. Dünyada en başarılı uygulama ise Thatcher döneminde yaşanmıştır. Thatcher uyguladığı liberal politikalarıyla piyasaları serbestleştirmiştir. Thatcher’in politikalarının dört temel ayağı vardı: Vergi indirimleri, kamu harcaması indirimleri, sıkı para politikası ve deregulasyon.Thatcher bu politikalarını uygularken iki teoriden ilham almıştır. Bunlardan birisi monetarizm, diğeri ise arz yönlü iktisattır. Çalışmada, Thatcher dönemi uygulamaları ve bu uygulamaların sonuçları değerlendirilmiştir.
