EVALUATION OF EPITHELIAL-MESENCHYMAL INTERACTION IN ODONTOGENIC CYSTS AND TUMORS
Abstract :
Objective: In this study the interaction between the epithelium and adjacent basement membrane in odontogenic lesions were investigated. Our goal was to understand that the epithelium how to interact with lesionel connective tissue. Material andMethod: This study included 81 odontogenic lesions archived in Gazi University Faculty of Dentistry Department of Oral Pathology. Histological slides were stained with PCNA, laminin and integrin antibody by immunohistochemistry. Fresh tissues of odontogenic lesions, supplied by the Gazi University Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, were evaluated on transmission electron microscope (TEM). Results: TEM showed an intact BM in all lesions. Ameloblastoma, adenomatoid odontogenic tumor and odontogenic keratocyst had the most pronounced proliferative epithelium. The BMshowed continuous laminin expresion in all lesions. Except adenomatoid odontogenic tumor all cases showed positive reactivity for integrin on the basal cell layer. Conclusion: It can be suggested that laminin and integrin are the affector molecules for epithelial connective tissue interaction. It can also be hypothesized that basement membrane plays a crucial role for epithelial organisation and development of all lesions which originated from odontogenic epithelium.
