HISTOPATHOLOGICAL AND HISTOMORPHOMETRIC INVESTIGATION OF THE EFFECTS OF CRYOSURGERY, ELECTROSURGERYAND SCALPEL ON WOUND HEALING
Abstract :
Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of cryosurgery, electrosurgery and scalpel techniques on wound healing. Material andMethod:Wound models were produced in the dorsum of the tongue of rats using the techniques of cryosurgery, electrosurgery and scalpel in order to evaluate wound healing. The 54 rats used in the study were divided into three groups. After creating wounds using scalpel, electrocautery and cryosurgery techniques in each group comparising 18 rats, hemostasis, and wound healing were evaluated using histopathological methods and post operative weight changes measured. Results: When the development of hemostasis was evaluated in three groups, it has been established that although the scalpel group has caused bleeding most, ‘fastest’ reepithelisation occurred in this group. The highest rate of inflammation occurred in cryosurgery group and complete healing did not occur in electrocautery group by the end of the evaluation period. Conclusion: It was concluded that due to its fast rate of healing, scalpel seems to be the technique that should be preferred first. However because it causes excessive bleeding, in patients with systemic problems and in whom surgical intervention is risky, cryosurgery or electrocautery may be preferred.
