Abstract :
Objective: In this study, investigation of the relationship between iron deficiency and periodontal disease through the comparison of iron deficiency findings of systemically healthy chronic periodontitis patients with those of generally and periodontically healthy control group was aimed. Material and Method: 159 chronic periodontitis patients and 61 healthy controls were included this study. The clinical parameters included plaque index (PI), gingival index (GI), probing depth (PD) and clinical attachment level (CAL). Peripheral blood samples were collected from the patients to examine the iron deficiency anemia diagnosis parameters (iron, iron binding, ferritine and CBC). Results: In results of the statistical analysis, significant relation was not determined between the chronic periodontitis patients and the healthy individuals for anemia and iron deficiency anemia (p 0.05). Iron deficiency anemia was significantly higher in females subjects compared with male subjects (p 0.05). Conclusion: This study presents currently no relationship between an infectious disease periodontitis and iron deficiency anemia.
