Abstract :
Objective: The objective of this study is to investigate the effects of glass fiber reinforcement and different polymerization methods on cytotoxicity of the acrylic denture base resins. Material andMethod: Four experimental groups including an equal number of specimens were established (n=16).Atotal of 64 specimens were prepared and processing denture base resins into a disk-shaped mold of dimensions 1 mm in thickness and 12 mm in diameter. Acrylic resin specimens, with and without glass fiber, polymerized by heat and chemically The specimens were incubated for 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours in Dulbecco’sModified EagleMedium Ham’s F12 respectively. Cytotoxicity of the L 929 mouse fibroblast cell was measured byMTTmethod. Data were statistically analyzed by one-way variance analysis (ANOVA) followed by MannWhitney-U and Tukey HSD test at a significance level of p 0.05. Results: Cell viability of glass fiber applied acrylic resin spesimens were decrease in the period of 24, 48, 72 hours, although increase in 96. hour in both heat and auto polymerized groups. However, these values were not found to be statistical significant (p 0.05) The cytotoxicity values of heat polymerized acrylic resin specimens with or without fiber were found to be lower than those of chemically polymerized groups respectively. (p 0.05) Conclusion: Result showed that, neither the unreinforced acrylic resin, nor the glass fiber reinforced acrylic resins were cytotoxic.
