Abstract :
Objective: Squamous cell carsinoma of the oral tongue is the most common intra-oral malignancy both worldwide and in Turkey. This study aimed to identify the risk factors for tongue cancer in patients applied to our clinic. Material and Method: In our study, age, gender, tobacco and alcohol habits of the cases of tongue cancer were analyzed; site of cancer and histological diagnosis were also assessed. Results: The most common age of diagnosis was 41-60 (50,5%) and the percentage of young adults with tongue cancer was 16,5%. The incidence of tongue cancers in men and in smokers was higher. Conclusion: The results of this study was compatible with literature and the incidence of tongue carsinoma in patients younger than 40 years was noticeably higher. For this reason health care providers and dentists have important duties for prevention and early detection of carsinoma of tongue.
