Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the knowledge level among parents about oral health and to evaluate the effectiveness of different educational programs to enhance this knowledge. Material and Method: Sixty-three parents who attended the first treatment appointment of their children in Gazi University, Faculty of Dentistry and Pediatric Dentistry Clinic participated in the study. Initial questionnaires were distributed to parents and participants were divided randomly into 3 groups. Group 1 received an informational leaflet and an audiovisual educational program, Group 2 received only the audiovisual education and Group 3 received only the informational leaflet. Participants were asked to respond to the initial questionnaire repeatedly at 1st, 3rd, 6th and 12th months in order to determine any evident change in the level of knowledge. Long and short term results were analyzed statistically. Results: Age, gender and socioeconomic status of the parents showed no statistically significant effect in the acquisition and retention of knowledge (p 0.05) while the level of education did have a statistically significant effect (p 0.05). All the education methods were found to be efficient in increasing the level and retention of knowledge. There was no statistically significant difference between the educational methods regarding to their effectiveness (p 0.05). Conclusion: Oral health education of parents by means of a leaflet and/or audiovisual educational program, efficiently improved the knowledge and it is thought that repeated education program can be important in determining the ong term retention of knowledge.
