Abstract :
Majority of EEG studies related with short term memory (STM) / working memory (WM) report increased amplitudes of posterior alpha correlated with the memory load in the retention phase. Another oscillation emphasized in relation with retention phase of STM/WM is increased theta oscillation in middle regions again correlated with memory load. However, in contrast to alpha oscillation increase, theta oscillation increase has not been reported consistently. In this study, EEG recordings were carried out while 18 healthy volunteers were performing a visual STM version of Sternberg paradigm. EEG signals obtained during the retention phase of STM/WM were evaluated using independent component analysis and fast Fourier transform methods. Comparison of the memory load conditions with the control condition showed a significant dominance in the number of subjects who showed a significant frontal alpha decrease (p 0,05) and frontal theta decrease (p 0,001) in memory load conditions.
