Abstract :
Objectives: In this study, we aim to investigate contraceptive methods used in a district, the sources of information about the contraceptive methods, the relation of education with these methods and the unwanted pregnancies.Materials and methods: In this study we included 423 multipar women who were using a contraceptive method applied to Obstetric and Gynecology Clinic of Kovancılar State Hospital between January 2010 and January 2011. The women included in the study age, pregnancy, contraceptive method used, their source of information about contraceptive methods, the number of voluntary abortion, educational status and income status were evaluated as parameters.Results: The mean age of study group was 35.4 ± 7.2 years, the average duration of marriage 13.7 ± 8.3 years, mean gravida 3.6 ± 1.9 and the number of voluntary 0.18 ± 0,25 were detected. Preferred contraceptive methods in order of frequency follows: coitus interruptus 31.9%, condom 15.4%, the calendar method 11.8%, oral contraceptive drugs (OCD) 10.6%, not using contraception 10.4%, intrauterine device (IUD) 10.2%, monthly injectable drugs 6.1% and tubal ligation (T/L) 3.5%, were used. Patients with higher levels of education and income levels are increasing the profile of modern contraception methods (p 0.05). Most unwanted pregnancies were observed in patients using the coitus interruptus method.Conclusion: In order to reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies and wanted abortions which reversely affect the women healthy; an appropriate contraception method must be employed. Therefore, women are properly informed and education levels should be increased.
